Going Green: Leicester Nirvana Takes Bold Step with Green Energy

Reducing Inequalities by Reducing Carbon

Leicester Nirvana is thrilled to announce a significant milestone in its journey toward becoming net-zero by reducing their reliance on the grid by 53%.

Leicester Nirvana’s sustainability initiative was made possible through the generous support of Centric and the Energy for Tomorrow programme, which is dedicated to helping communities across the UK achieve net-zero targets. This collaboration allows Leicester Nirvana to access vital grant funding and expert advice, enabling a more sustainable future for grassroots football. Over the lifespan of the PV system, the club could potentially reduce CO2 emissions, comparable to removing approximately 51 UK cars from the road each year.

The club is implementing a comprehensive solar energy solution combined with advanced battery storage. This installation is expected to reduce their reliance on the grid by 53% (37% solar and an additional 16% battery storage), allowing the club to source just 47% of its power from the grid. To put it into perspective, by producing 26,451 kWh of clean electricity annually, Leicester Nirvana anticipates an annual CO2 reduction of 5,477 kg. This is equivalent to:

  • the emissions produced by driving almost 20,000 miles in an average UK petrol car,

  • planting approximately 251 mature trees,

  • powering a 100-watt light bulb for over 29 years continuously,

  • powering approximately 7 average UK homes for a year or removing the equivalent of 3.7 households’ worth of carbon from the atmosphere each year.

Furthermore, the electricity generated will not only power their facilities but will also contribute to the local energy grid, promoting sustainability within the community.

“Our project reflects the growing need for football to have a stronger focus on climate justice. By installing our PV system, we are able to reduce inequalities by reducing carbon - which is a massive achievement.” - Ivan Liburd, SDG Champion, Leicester Nirvana.

It is possible that the collective impact over 25 Years, the lifespan of the PV system, could potentially reduce 136,925 kg of CO2 emissions, comparable to removing approximately 51 UK cars from the road each year.

This initiative backs up the amazing work that the club has already achieved by becoming one of the first grassroots clubs to measure their Carbon Footprint, create a Net Zero Strategy and to partner with the only UK’s United Nations Academic Impact Hub for Sustainable Development held at De Montfort University.

Zak Hajat, Chair of Leicester Nirvana said, “We are passionate about this transition towards sustainability, not only for the benefit of our club but also for the broader community. Our vision is clear: by embracing renewable energy and responsible practices, we aim to inspire others to follow suit, playing a vital role in not only the UK’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions but also by embracing the wider United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.”
