One of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (Goal 10), is to ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, including by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies and action in this regard. One the our responses is to continue to challenge practices and policies that discriminate and that perpetuate racism.

Why is it important for football clubs to continue to take an anti-racist stance?

It is crucial for football clubs to continue to take a strong anti-racist stance at all levels of the game because football has an immense influence on society and culture. Football clubs are powerful institutions that shape attitudes and behaviours on a global scale. By promoting anti-racism initiatives, clubs can leverage their platform to combat discrimination, challenge stereotypes, and foster inclusivity within their communities and beyond.

  • Promoting Equality and Inclusivity is important to champion anti-racist values, and to send clear messages that all individuals, regardless of race, ethnicity, or nationality, deserve equal opportunities and respect both on and off the pitch.

  • Educating Members and Players means clubs have a significant influence and can educate their followers about the importance of tolerance, empathy, and understanding. As well as raise awareness about the harmful impact of racism and discrimination.

  • Creating a Safe and Inclusive Environment, clubs can create an environment where diversity is celebrated, and prejudice is not tolerated. This inclusive atmosphere benefits players, fans, staff, and the wider community, with a sense of unity and belonging.

  • Setting an Example for the Future is vital and by using the power of football to shape social norms and attitudes by publicly denouncing racism and discrimination; means clubs set a positive example for generations to follow. This ripple effect can lead to a broader cultural shift towards greater acceptance, tolerance, and respect for diversity.

With that being said, football clubs have a moral obligation to stand against racism and uphold the principles of equality, justice, and fairness. By actively challenging discriminatory practices and behaviours, clubs demonstrate their commitment to building a more equitable and harmonious society.
